Online discussion titled “Towards a New European Commission”, organized by UK in a Changing Europe.

The event delved into several key themes surrounding Ursula von der Leyen’s upcoming second term as President of the European Commission. Discussions focused on the EU’s approach to European security amid rising geopolitical tensions, the future of the Green Deal and the potential for it to be scaled back, as well as the impact of new member states potentially joining the Union. The session also explored how the EU will manage its relationship with the UK, and its evolving diplomatic ties with global powers like the US and China.

The speakers included: Catherine Barnard (Chair), University of Cambridge and UK in a Changing Europe; Loukas Tsoukalis, ELIAMEP; Sophie Pornschlegel, Europe Jacques Delors; and Fabian Zuleeg, European Policy Centre.

The 18th European Seminar took place in Hydra (26-29 September) under the leadership of ELIAMEP’s President, Loukas Tsoukalis, with a most appropriate theme for our times “Can the EU Become a Political Adult?”

Influential and extremely knowledgeable people from different countries and backgrounds who spent two and a half days engaged in intensive discussions on a wide range of topics, including the new political landscape in Europe, relations with the US and China, the war in Ukraine, European defence, protectionism, growth and competitiveness. A very successful event even though discussions were not always upbeat.

Loukas Tsoukalis writes about the complete deadlock in which the Middle East issue has found itself and explains why only a decisive intervention by the United States could (potentially) change the situation.

Professor Loukas Tsoukalis’ book “Europe’s Coming of Age”, Polity Press, was referred to by columnist Tony Barber in an article in the Financial Times. Barber analyses the difficulties faced by France and Germany and refers in detail to Tsoukalis’ book, while explaining in detail the solution proposed by the “Greek intellectual” (as he describes him) for the EU and its foreign and defence policy.

Professor Loukas Tsoukalis, was invited to attend the official lunch and the ceremony in honour of the Emperor and the Empress of Japan held at the University of Oxford on 28 June.

Prof. Tsoukalis was the supervisor of Empress Masako when she was a student in Oxford.

at the closing session (24 May) of the two-day conference The State of the Union 2024, organised by the European University Institute in Florence. The closing session took place in the Salone Cinquecento, the main attraction of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.
